Sandals, flip flops, and bare feet are the way to go with summer heat. Our tennis shoes and boots are relegated to occasional use when needed. Did you know that Scorpions and Spiders love to hang out in the relative safety (or so they think) of your seldomly used foot wear? A quick shake of your shoes, and a glance inside can save you a lot of pain and trouble. Trust me a scorpion or brown recluse bite on your toe is far from convenient, extremely dangerous and easily prevented. So next time you head to the gym, or throw on a pair of rain boots to protect yourself from the torrential downpours that Oklahoma has been experiencing lately, give those shoes a shake and a glance and you will be good to go!
If you do get bit then be sure to seek medical attention if it's a scorpion, black widow or brown recluse. In the case of Scorpions and Black Widows there is a life threatening potential (although slim) especially in the very young or old or immune compromised. Brown recluses can also do severe damage to your feet if bitten.
And remember, keeping up with regular pest control visits greatly decreases the chance of spiders and scorpions taking up residence in your home to begin with!
