The Scorpion

May 29, 2018

Oklahoma climate seems to be ideal for many insects and pests that aren't necessarily seen in other areas of the country.  The Bark Scorpion is generally seen in the south west of the United States and one of the most commonly seen in Oklahoma of about 3-5 species of Scorpions that live here. While they usually are not deadly to adult humans they are still painful and can harm small children, pets, and the elderly, so it makes sense to be aware of them.

While most varieties of Scorpions are reclusive, the Bark Scorpion is unique in that they tend to winter in groups.  They usually will not be obvious unless you are looking for them as they prefer to run along walls, and seek shelter under rocks and brush, attics and other tucked away places in your home. If  you have a black light; however, they appear to glow in the dark when exposed to these lights. Bark Scorpions are small, so they only need an opening about 1/16th of an inch in diameter to enter your home, and they are hearty as well, in Nuclear testing done in the United States Scorpions were found at ground zero unharmed (along with lizards and cockroaches).  And no, the glowing in the dark has nothing to do with the nuclear testing.

So what does it feel like to be stung by a scorpion?  Although not deadly to most, it's probably an experience best avoided if possible.  A scorpion sting can cause numbness and intense pain at the site, temporary paralysis, and short term difficulty breathing, vomiting and tingling.  The pain is often described as feeling like a recurring electrical shock. In severe cases medical attention is recommended as there is an antivenin available.
